Deep below the Castle in the town of Cornelia, a darkness would compress in one of the many staterooms reserved for soldiers and knights. It would swirl and undulate until it formed the familiar corridor of darkness, and from this portal would step the equally familiar Sir Garland, fully armored and carrying his sword at his hip while his cape flowed in the current created by the moving shadows. He stood a moment in this simple room consisting of just a bed, a desk with candle, and a cornelian coat of arms...
He wasted no time. Walking from the center of the room, he went to his desk and threw open the drawers to pull out maps and schematics. He spread them out, looking over with renewed vigor. He had spent many nights studying these. In the past, it was to protect the castle... now it was to take it down brick by blessed brick...
"The passageways used for a quick escape... I'll use those to my advantage..." Garland muttered through his helmet to the presence he felt approaching through the portal...

Jenova examined the room, finding no fault within it. Part of her remembered various inns and houses on Gaia. Still, this room was well situated for someone like Garland. "I am at your service, Sir Garland." She spoke, her body bowing while she spoke. She didn't know what he wanted her to do, so she remained standing until he had a plan to discuss. Part of her wondered where Edgar and Terra had ended up, but she couldn't focus on them.

Garland looked over his shoulder, then waved for Jenova to join him. He held open the charts for her, demonstrating the various hidden passageways in the castle. "These are the best ways to access nearly every room in the castle..." he explained, pointing out the royal chambers. "Plus, they're only lightly guarded... not that it would matter if I have the backing of my soldiers..."
He looked to her, getting her impression on the matter. "This needs to be a swift, surgical strike. If I simply murder the king, there are others that would attempt to take the throne. What we need is for the king to sign over the kingdom to me instead... How might you suggest we do that?" he asked.
Suddenly, noise outside his room. He looked up and let go of the charts, going over to his door to peek out. Out in the hall, which doubled as the medical wing, was the woman's companions, and quite a few of his soldiers in bad shape. He looked over to Jenova, nodding. "Seems we arrived just in time..." he muttered...

Having been treated kindly by the White Mages, Edgar sat against the wall on his bed rubbing at the back of his head, looking out across the room to Terra and Wedge, and then to Biggs, who seemed also to be looking a bit out of shape.
"Thank you," he said kindly to the White Mage at his side, and he winked her way. "You've been so kind to me it's as if we're meant to be!" He chuckled, but shook his head. Not the time for that!
"Er...well, I shall do as you said, then, Miss, and lay down now..."

Jenova's eyes closed, trying to figure out something going on in her head. He mentioned having the King 'sign' over a kingdom. The only way to do that was to marry into the family and then take care of him before he has the chance to discover he had been fooled. Still, courting a woman took a longer amount of time to decide, even if there was a princess.
At the sound of Garland's comment, she could sense that Edgar had returned for some reason. She waited for Garland to return before speaking again. "I would suggest marriage into the family, but that would take too long at this rate."

Garland walked back to the desk, his arms crossing in thought as he heard what Jenova had to say. He lifted a hand to rest against the chin of his facemask, indicating deep thought. "Marriage is one route, but the royals can only marry themselves to royalty, which cuts me out of the loop. That is a dead end no matter how you cut it..." he muttered, then looked down at the papers once more.
A thought struck him, and his hand lowered to press his palm against the schematics. "What about ransom...?" he pondered aloud...

"If the King knows you have something like that..." Jenova spoke, her voice sort of seductive at the evil thoughts Garland had. "He may choose to destroy you with something equally powerful." A smile came on her face, as if it were a fun idea to play with. How did Garland intend to take a royal ransom without having a strong force come after him. Her eyes remained serious, one hand on her chin.

"Hmph..." Garland muttered, standing a bit taller with his chest puffed out proudly. "He doesn't have a warrior strong enough to challenge me... but a bloody conflict only leads to disorder which leaves the state weak... Leaving us vulnerable to any other kingdom with conquest on the mind..." he spoke, his voice deep and strong.
Leaning in, he flipped through the papers on the table, pondering aloud as he did. "But just to be safe... what if we took something he valued too much to risk a sloppy rescue? Something even he, in his great foolishness, wouldn't dare put at unnecessary risk..."
He thought a moment, then pointed to a single bedroom not far from the throneroom. "Not the king... but the daughter..."

"Ah, you amaze me Sir Garland." Jenova spoke, her eyes seeming to brighten up a bit. Her smile remained, though a bit more curled up. "How will you manage to get the king to sign such a precious thing over for his daughter? Your plan could easily backfire."

Terra stired on her bed shifting from one side to another, slowly she opened her eyes and looked around, setting her eyes on Edgar she moved off of her bed and hobbled her way toward him.
Terra mad her way to a crossed before sitting down onto her knees next to Edgar "Sorry about that Edgar, i guess I've been a little tired lately."she said while smoothing out some of the blanket she brought with her from the bed.
"Edgar just what happened to you" she asked putting a hand next to an injury on his arm, while some hair began falling in front of her face "Sabin would be kinda angry if we went back with you missing an arm."

Garland bowed his head a moment, considering these things a moment before looking up. "The King positively dotes on the girl... He is past his prime, and she is the only child to come of his union with his queen. She represents his bloodline, which he cherishes..." He looked down, tapping the room slightly as he spoke.
"And if she isn't worth the kingdom to him... well..." with that, he pulled a knife and slammed it down onto the spot where her bed would reside. "...at least I'll have tried the more civilized approach..." he said, leaving the knife jutting up from the table. He turned in place to glance at the door, thinking.
"It'd have to wait until nightfall... after your friends have had their trial... I don't want this little... variable... in the works when I make my move."

"The trial would be a perfect diversion." Jenova spoke, smiling. "During the trial you could take the princess without her father knowing." She closed her eyes, leaning back. "I could easily do some of that work for you, seeing as you need control of the princess in order to keep her with you."

Garland thought a moment, then shook his head. "While the idea has merit... they'll want my presence at the trial, and I wouldn't be suprised at all if your name came up by your friends... I'd need you on hand in case..." He started to pace a bit, thinking.
"When everyone's asleep... That's when we'll strike. In the meantime... we need to talk to my soldiers... convince them to remain silent... Or kill them..." he said, then gathered up the plans, putting them away. "I'm sure you want to talk to your friends..." he said, looking up to the woman...

"I shall do my best to make sure you plan succeeds." She spoke, looking at Garland. She'd have to see Edgar and Terra to be sure of what do with them. A trial may most likely convict them. She wondered if she should help them or let them take the fall. "I will return when you need me." She bowed respectfully, walking towards Edgar and Terra's location.

When he noticed that Terra was waking up he inched slightly from his pillow and sidled up to sit; he gave her a warm smile as she spoke and shook his head. "There is no need to apologize to me, Terra; I think passing through Jenova's strange portal contraption wore us out, or something. I felt it too."
He chuckled about her comment regarding Sabin's feelings on the matter and waved a jeweled hand. "Oh, pish posh, my dear. Surely Sabin knows I can handle myself after what our team managed. I mean, look! We defeated Kefka. All of us. A triumph...I'm positive Sabin understands we know what we're doing."
